General Information:

Ø  The Department of Labour is one of the oldest Departments of Government & is carrying out the responsibility of labour welfare and maintenance of smooth industrial relation. The activities regarding enforcement of labour laws and promotion of industrial peace are simultaneously carried on, so that the twin objectives of industrial growth and labour welfare can be achieved.

Ø  At the state level, the Department is headed by the Hon’ble Minister for Labour and he is assisted by the Principal Secretary. This Department has more sub departments directly functioning under the control of the Hon’ble Minister for Labour. At Official level the Principal Secretary to Government, Labour Department, controls and co-ordinates these four sub-departments.

The four sub-departments are:

(i)        Department of Labour.

(ii)      Department of Factories, Boilers, Industrial Safety & Health.

(iii)    Directorate of Employment & Training.

(iv)    Directorate of ESIS (M) Services. (Employees State Insurance Scheme)

Ø  The Heads of the Departments of all the above 4 sub-Departments directly report to the Hon’ble Minister for Labour through the Principal Secretary. They are independently looking after the work of their respective departments.

Objective & vision

Ø  The Department of Labour is implementing various labour laws in order to facilitate both the Employer and Employee in order to bring good harmony to the twin objectives i.e. industrial growth and the labour welfare. The Department of Labour mainly implements labour laws such as, Beedi & Cigar workers Act, The Contract Labour Act, The Industrial Disputes Act, and The Child Labour Act, the Building & the other Constructions workers Act, the Minimum wages Act, The Payment of Gratuity Act and the payment of Wages Act etc.

Ø  This office is a sub-divisionally operated at the District level. The issuance of all departmental notifications and circulars are mainly monitored at the Head Quarter situated at Bangalore. The Department of Labour has its own official web site www.labour.kar.nic.in where all the circulars and notifications are uploaded in this web site from time to time.
